In appreciation of a northern flicker

This tree in our backyard should not exist. It probably grew as a volunteer shoot and the former home owners didn't remove it before it reached such a large size, it became too difficult to do on one's own. It's along the fence line and snakes around the power lines, and, in general, doesn't look like it belongs.

But it's home for wildlife. Specifically in this case, a northern flicker. I caught him watching me this spring, before the tree leafed out and blocked anyone's view of the nest.

I love the northern flicker's red patch as well as the vibrant yellow underneath their wings, only visible when they take flight. That strong beak can pound out a beat that can be heard throughout the neighborhood!
